Video conferencing systems
Video conferencing terminal
Video conferencing codec
  • VCS codec provides coding and decoding of audio and video information exchanged during videoconferencing. Regular personal computer with special software installed can also act as a codec
Cameras for video conferences
Depending on the conditions in which the video conference and the required level of communication quality, there are two basic types of cameras used:
  • webcams
  • PTZ-cameras .
Webcams
Professional webcams provide high quality images and picture resolution of 720p or 1080p. Many of them have a built-in microphone and remote control, which allows you to achieve a more comfortable environment for communication

PTZ cameras
Large video conferencing systems installed in government meeting rooms, congresses and plenums, when it is necessary to involve a large number of participants simultaneously, require more serious equipment.
  • Here webcams are replaced by a more professional and feature-rich type of equipment - PTZ-cameras
  • PTZ-cameras (from English "Pan, Tilt, Zoom"), unlike webcams and conventional surveillance cameras, can rotate in several planes and scale the distance to the observed object.
  • PTZ-camera is an indispensable assistant in providing videoconferencing sessions, because it can automatically focus on the participant of the meeting, allowing, thus, to do without an operator.
  • PTZ-cameras differ in their functionality (resolution and image quality, magnification) and tilt angle. For example, some models can rotate around its axis by almost 360°, which allows, for example, by installing such a camera on the table of the meeting room or under the ceiling (dome type PTZ-cameras), receive with its help an almost complete overview of the conference room and the speakers.
Organization of a videoconferencing system
When selecting a VCS, the following parameters are taken into account:
  • Room parameters (acoustic characteristics, lighting level, sound insulation)
  • Maximum number of participants of a videoconferencing session
  • Necessary quality level of sound and video
  • Budget possibilities
Small meeting rooms often use a regular LCD panel for image output. If the hall is big enough or there is a need to display not only an image of a remote participant, but also demonstrate different information (schemes, diagrams and other additional images) simultaneously, use a video wall of LCD panels.

Professional videoconferencing equipment systems already have their own built-in audio capabilities. Desktop (or overhead) microphones for several meeting participants at once, or individual desktop microphones when there are many participants, are also used.

The simplest variants of personal videoconferencing use an ordinary computer monitor with a camera and a headset.
Multipoint conference server (MCU or video bridge)
MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) - Multipoint conference server (also called "video bridge" or simply "bridge") is responsible for video conferencing.
  • Processes and distributes streams of video and audio information
  • Provides switching between different systems of videoconference equipment
MCU server can be implemented either as a standalone device, or be embedded into a videoconferencing terminal.
Telecommunications network
The simplest and most common method of video conferencing is to use the Internet telecommunications network. Both wired and wireless communication methods are used. The wireless channel is especially in demand in such areas as telemedicine, when it is necessary to establish communication with people in hard-to-reach regions, etc.
Video conferencing software solution
VCS software solutions do not require installation of additional expensive equipment and can be implemented even on personal mobile devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones). Modern IP-technologies allow successful application of software videoconferencing solutions not only for personal use, but also more and more widely to be implemented in the offices of companies of different levels.
